Right on our doorstep, the Northbrook Wetlands has quite a story. Once home to early European industry — flax mills, a brewery, even a tannery, it has since been carefully restored into a thriving wildlife and recreation reserve.
Alongside remnants of the past, native plantings now give birds space to breed, tracks to wander, and plenty of room for kids to ride their bikes. The 1.5km trail loop suits all ages and fitness levels.
The pūteketeke (Australasian crested grebe) is a diving water bird that builds floating nests. Their numbers are declining, which is exactly why protecting wetlands like ours matters so much.
The trail is bike and pram-friendly, just please leave the dogs at home.
